ONE Freedom was founded in 2003 as a response to stress and trauma in our society and as a means of empowering individuals through education and training. Co-founders Elizabeth Hawkins and Stephen Robinson saw a national need for programs that could assist individuals with finding balance in the face of both chronic and acute stressors, and to promote strength and transformation through these experiences.
In addition to recognizing a national stress epidemic, the initiation of military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, made it clear that there needed to be a nonprofit, community-based effort in support of U.S. service members, families and care providers regarding stress-mitigation and resiliency building.
ONE Freedom received IRS nonprofit status in 2006, followed by our first generous individual donor contributions and a major grant from the Iraq-Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund (IADIF). IADIF is a private, donor-sponsored fund under the California Community Foundation (CCF) and has supported 52 nonprofits nationwide that help OIF and OEF Veterans and their families. Beginning in 2007, ONE Freedom was able to launch its work in ways that immediately began to positively impact lives.
Since the spring of 2007, ONE Freedom has served over 4,000 veterans, family members and care providers in Colorado and nationwide. The original vision that Elizabeth and Stephen held— helping to heal America's cultural stress epidemic—has grown into a mission of support for our nation's warriors, their families, those who serve them, and the communities to which they return.
