Creating reintegration solutions for our military service members, families and communities.
Since 9/11, more than 2 million U.S. troops have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, nearly 18 percent of our soldiers return home with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and more than 320,000 suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI), while thousands more are misdiagnosed or are not diagnosed at all. The long-term effects of these invisible injuries to our service men and women and their families are devastating. An urgent national priority should be to heal the wounds that are not so easily seen or recognizable. Education, training and on-going therapeutic support are vital.
The RECONNECT vision is a decompression center in Coronado, California, offering a menu of self-paced therapies to military and civilian veterans who suffer from the invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. Project RECONNECT is the only center of its kind serving war veterans by providing alternative therapies that address trauma on a brain-body basis all under one roof. Our philosophy is to provide clients with non-pharmaceutical solutions to healing, including hands-on therapy, knowledge and skills to transform the path from stress to strength. Among the detrimental impacts of PTSD and TBI is a dissociation from humanity and from one’s self. Our mission is to help our clients reconnect to their lives, their families and the communities.
RECONNECT is the vision of Navy SEAL Mikal Vega, a 22-year combat veteran who walked the road from trauma to recovery. Mikal suffered a combat related injury when a roadside IED exploded. He shook off the effects and continued to serve in battle. It wasn’t until several years after returning home that he realized the extent of his “invisible injuries.” He struggled with daily tasks, relationships and concentration. His ability to heal was hindered by neurophysiological concerns and care providers unwilling or unable to explore something other than talk therapy and prescriptions. Pharmaceutical remedies only masked the root problem and made Mikal feel further away from a solution. At the same time, other avenues for recovery began to open and he decided to follow his instinct toward alternative approaches. After exploring a variety of options in his own community, Mikal chose a handful of modalities that appealed to him and invested time and resources for over one year. In the end, he made a radical leap forward - from the depths of post-traumatic stress to feeling liberated from his symptoms. Mikal continues his healing and is committed to a personalized process of optimizing his recovery. It’s this model – and the vision of helping others create their own model- that drives RECONNECT.
Transforming Stress to Strength™ Through a partnership with ONE Freedom, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, RECONNECT seeks to raise an initial $2 million to open the doors of their flagship facility in San Diego, CA. The RECONNECT Facility will provide military and civilian veterans with exceptional therapists and services that focus on decompression, internal focus and recovery. ONE Freedom provides education and training to returning veterans, families and care providers, and will offer the Strength after Service classes on-site at RECONNECT. These courses are based on the brain-body response to stress and skills to self-regulate. They have been taught to more than 11,000 active duty personnel and over 6,000 veterans and family members to astounding reviews and proven results. We ask for your donations today to establish the 1st RECONNECT Facility in CA to help returning U.S. Troops.
